out of the blue
On Friday, we were walking home from school.
"Do daddies have babies?" asked C
"No, only women have babies. Mommies. Only mommies have babies." i said.
"Why?"
"Because only women have the right parts. We say a mommy has a baby in her belly, but it isn't really her belly. It's a special place, called a uterus, and only women have them. That's the difference between women and men."
"Oh."
We plod along in relative silence for half a block or so.
"Why did our baby die?"
**double take on my part, she has never brought up Nicolas independently before**
"You mean our baby Nicolas, why did he die?"
"Yes"
"Well, it was an accident. Sometimes accidents happen."
"But why?"
"We were at the hospital for him to be born, but he died. It was an accident."
"But why?"
"Um, we don't really know...the doctors don't know....that's the thing...um...sometimes these things happen...."
"But WHY????"
"OK, look. When the baby is inside the mommy, the baby is attached to the mommy with a cord. The baby is inside, right? So he can't eat or breathe air, but he doesn't have to, because he gets everything he needs from the cord, from his mommy. We think something went wrong with Nicolas's cord, that he couldn't get what he needed to live."
"Oh."
**silence -- she ponders this, while i wonder what the people walking around us think of this conversation**
"I don't want babies to die."
"Me neither, sweetheart."
**ok, i nearly lost it here, but i don't think she saw me tear up**
"But our babies were born, and they were alive."
"Yes, we were lucky, everything went right with M and T."
"and me too, and A too"
"Yes"
"You were more careful?"
**wow, blame the mother starts early, huh?**
"No, i was equally careful with all of you. But Nicolas died and you lived, and i don't really have an answer for why."
"Oh.......can i have a fruit snack when i get home?"
"After you eat something good for you, sure."
